Historical Library of the University of Cádiz
The University of Cádiz has a relevant bibliographic and documentary heritage made up of a collection of books on scientific, technical and humanistic subjects published between the 16th and 21st centuries. The origin is fundamentally in the funds coming from the academic institutions that preceded it: The Royal College of Surgery of the Navy, the School of Commerce, the School of Pilots, the School of Industrial Experts and the Normal Schools of Teachers. In addition to this the library received donations from private collections that have taken place over the years and which currently continue as a result of a policy of donations that is carried out from different areas of the university.
We consider bibliographic heritage collections of the UCA, all those ancient collections, manuscripts, unique pieces and historical, literary and scientific documentary sources. Incunabula and old prints, rare and even unique works due to the characteristics of the press, with illustrations, engravings, maps. Although we extend this consideration to other works: modern manuscripts, autographs, originals, prince editions, bibliophile editions, facsimiles, bindings, limited editions, gray literature, ephemeral publications, posters, works generated by the university itself, and others that they can become special, whose conservation is important, regardless of their support. So we have to work with a vision of the future. The bibliographic heritage includes both ancient and modern collections. The concept of ancient and modern is relative and changing.
These sets of works currently constitute the history of our Library, individually and as a whole they possess extraordinary value as pieces of the historical, cultural, artistic and scientific heritage belonging to our institution, which must be protected, conserved and disseminated.
Our strategic objective is to make these heritage collections available to our users as an object of research and learning.Historical and Heritage Collection
